Mr. Chad DeVoe, Kevin and his dog Lucy have a huge challenge in front of them this summer – their goal is to hike the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Mr DeVoe is a 7th Grade Life Sciences teacher from Groton, NY and will be using his 3G iPhone with MotionX-GPS to communicate to his students and friends throughout his journey. They plan to start their trek in 4 days on April 4, 2009.
The hike is 2,175 miles and they expect it will take them five months to complete. His gear list includes everything from duct tape to a water purifyer to an iPhone 3G – everything one would need to survive five months in the wilderness! (He has a solar charger for the iPhone)
He will be blogging along the way and posting his daily tracks using MotionX-GPS.
Here is one of Chad’s training hikes using MotionX-GPS:

Lance has been using MotionX-GPS to record tracks skiing and mountain biking. Then he uses GPS Visualizer to see the elevation profile of his track. It is simple, just email your track from within MotionX-GPS with the one touch “Email Track Now” button and the KML file gets attached to the email. Then upload your file to GPS Visualizer to see the elevation profile.
Lance also said, “I also have an upcoming epic mountain bike race. I use profiles from my training rides to try and match the course profile for training purposes. I actually never thought I would consider mounting the iPhone to my handlebars until your software came out.”
Here is the elevation profile of his latest track while skiing.

Sergey went on a mountain bike ride yesterday with his updated MotionX-GPS 4.1 with MotionX-Map Caching. He shared his experience with the MotionX team. “I ride this track all the time and there are certain areas where I lose network connection but now with map caching it was no problem. Before I left for my ride, I launched MotionX-GPS and turned on caching, then I just panned the map to cover the area of my ride. During my ride, I always had a map. It works great!”

Using MotionX-GPS on the iPhone 3G is a great way to look at your sailing races between each race and at the end of the day. This past weekend two MotionX-GPS user’s sent us their tracks and a few photos. They both use the AquaPac to keep their phones dry all day. Jen has been using MotionX-GPS on her 29er sailing skiff and Daniel on his DN Class iceboat. Daniel says, “I love seeing how fast I went for each race and try to increase my average speed around the race course for each race. MotionX-GPS allows me to compare my results from one race to the next.
It is perfect!”

OpenStreetMap can be extremely detailed – take Boston for example. This shows the shape of things to come and the power of OpenStreetMap. Every T-stop (subway), building and park are mapped in Boston. The walking paths through the all the parks are mapped, even the airport terminals are marked and so are the hospitals and libraries. OpenStreetMap provides the opportunity to map more on one map than has ever been mapped before. Add content, edit content and help create the most comprehensive maps.
