Storm Surveying with MotionX-GPS

After a tornado or devastating straight-line wind storm, one of Andy Bailey’s duties as Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Kansas City, Missouri is to survey the damage, determine whether it was produced by a tornado or straight-line winds, and estimate the strength of the wind based on the damage.

“MotionX-GPS is a great help documenting the storm as I can quickly send waypoints with notes and photos back to the office in order to update our web page and get the findings out to the world quickly.” –Andy Bailey

The waypoint markers pictured, along with the associated photos below, were acquired using MotionX-GPS. They show how devastating (and dangerous) storms can be in the US Midwest.

Birdwatching with MotionX-GPS

Shirley Devan is the President of the Williamsburg Bird Club in Virginia. She recently started using MotionX-GPS to record her tracks and document the location of bird nesting areas along her route. The site she shared with us is an Army Corps of Engineers site (which is currently closed to the public) where she has been assisting Project Manager, ornithologist Ruth Beck, who is tracking nesting birds at the site. Ruth has been studying birds here for 20 years, and writes and submits a report each Fall to the Army Corps of Engineers on the nesting bird colonies.

“I was really just experimenting and seeing what happened. I had camera, binocs, and backpack strapped on while paying attention to the iPhone and MotionX. Overall results turned out very well for a first effort, and Ruth is thrilled with the results. MotionX-GPS software is very impressive.”

Fitness Tracking with MotionX-GPS

written by – Dawn Foster, Web Worker Daily

Staying fit is particularly important for those of us who spend our days sitting in front of our computers. Exercise provides many benefits, including keeping your brain working better, improved mood, longer lifespan, increased stamina and reduced risk for many health issues. I’ve written before about how I use technology to keep myself on track and motivated about my fitness regime.
This weekend, I ran across MotionX-GPS, a great new fitness tool that uses the GPS functionality of my iPhone to automatically map my workouts and provide me with data including speed, distance, altitude, maps, photos and more.
