Biking

glennGlenn, from Sweden, has been cycling with MotionX-GPS and tracking his training progress for the Vätternrundan 2010. Here’s what he had to say after one of his rides. “After a warm and pleasant day I decided to get on my bike and burn some fat. First 10 kilometers – I had my best ever average speed of 33 km/h. Then the rain started to pour down. Wet warm asphalt is very slippery…but that didn’t matter at all, I felt really strong.”

Bona loves to use MotionX-GPS riding his Ducati through Indonesia. Here’s a story from his last ride to Puncak.

photo1

Last Monday my self and several Ducatisti friends did a short trip to Puncak, a mountainous area about 90km (55 miles) south of Jakarta. Puncak is very popular destination for weekend trip for people live in Jakarta and its surrounding area. With Puncak’s cool and fresh air Puncak is the only area close enough to get away from a hot and polluted air of Jakarta.

I also would like to test my iPhone based MotionX-GPS during this ride and I use the MotionX-GPS more as a “route recorder” then a “road guide”. So the device will not tell me which way to go, but will record my route info; such as Speed, Elapsed Time, etc during the trip.

It was about 10 of us with various Ducati bike. There were Superbike 996 and 848, several Monster, and off course several Multistrada as well. We initially plan to start around 6 AM and start from Citos, a shopping mall in South Jakarta. Trip to Puncak will always jam pack especially in the weekend thus we plan to start early to avoid that. Unfortunately some of us came late thus we start about 6:45 AM.

Before we start, I used the MotionX Stopwatch to record my trip, or it called “Track” by the software. Once reached the destination MotionX will then shows the information about the trip as shows in bellow pic.

photo3 photo7

As in the above pic we start around 6:36 AM, with distance about 82.7km (51.3 Mile), elapsed time of 1:55 and average speed of 43.1km/h (26.7 mph). It also shows the road that we took on its map (top pic). As you can see we only manage to do average speed of 43.1km/h thus it took us almost 2 hours to cover about 50 miles. This is normal in Jakarta as Motorcycle is not allow to enter highway or toll road and the public road is almost certainly pack especially road to a popular spot such as Puncak.

photo5

Our destination was a popular restaurant called Puncak Pas and we arrived there around 9AM. I record the location of this restaurant using a Waypoint on the software as in bellow pic. Way Point (Wypt on the software) will record geo position and other info such as Altitude. As you can see below Puncak Pas restaurant is about 1,468m (4,816 ft) above sea level.

photo4

We also met fellow riders, there were fellow sport rider with R1, R6, CBR1000RR as well as Harley and Honda Goldwing. Shows that this is a very popular destination for a bike riding. The sport bike group was about to leave the restaurant when we arrived. They were trying to beat the traffic as the traffic will getting much worse by the hour so we grabed a quick brunch and prepare our self to return back to Jakarta.

photo2

I did not turn on the GPS return back to Jakarta. The traffic will be bad and I didn’t see any point recording it. As suspected the traffic came down was bad to say the least. Some of us get separated in to several groups and as we getting close to sea level the temperature was simply getting hotter. From Puncak to Jakarta we passed Bogor city and Depok City and we did stop by for a drink and I managed to grab bellow pic on scorching hot Depok City. The temperature was easily about 40C (104F).

photo8

Arrived in Jakarta around 12 Noon it was just about time to see the Motegi MotoGP race. As to the MotionX-GPS, I like it sharing feature. Once recorded I can share via email or Facebook the recorded track.

The track can also be seen using Google Map or Google Earth, bellow was the track I took that day.

Running

The San Francisco Marathon is July 26th – that’s just over 1 month away and Susan is getting ready. Susan has been using MotionX-GPS as a training tool for the last few months. Here is a track of her latest training run. It was a tough 7.1 mile loop with two big climbs. She was proud of her time: 1:05:21. That’s an average pace of 9′12″ per mile.
“Great run with MotionX-GPS” –Susan, Sausalito, CA

Manu has also been using MotionX-GPS to track his training runs around his home town of Aix-les-Bains. This is a track of one of his favorite 5k runs. He loves that he can instantly share his runs with his coach and teammates directly from his iPhone with Facebook and Twitter.

Skiing

Jörgen has been training his 1 year old husky, Wahya, using a technique called skijording. (The dog pulls you on cross country skis) He tracks each training run with MotionX-GPS. The white husky is named Vintervarg. Both dogs are pure bred Siberian Huskies.

This is his latest training run with Wahya:

“The MotionX is a fantastic tool both for documenting the training and giving me access to data that tells me how far we’ve run, and the speed (max and average).
During the summertime I use the MotionX to track the different hikes that we go on, both for myself, and to share with others that share our interest for hiking and camping out.
I love the fact that you can share the data using google maps and that you can incorporate photos taken during the tracking.
I will highly recommend this app for everybody that enjoys any outdoor activities or sports, both to document the trails you go or to keep track of your progress during training.” –Jörgen Honerud, Norway

Sailing

Sailing World Magazine: New “App” Takes GPS to New Realms
“What the MotionX-GPS application does is combine GPS technology with the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer (the technology that senses movement) to create a highly accurate navigational interface.”
– Sailing World, April 2009

The application has all the essentials a racing sailor would want:
-Digital Compass
-Navigation (waypoint input, latitude/longitude, Velocity Made Good, Speed Over Ground, etc.)

Jen has been using MotionX-GPS on her 29er sailing skiff and Daniel on his DN Class iceboat. Daniel says, “I love seeing how fast I went for each race and try to increase my average speed around the race course for each race. MotionX-GPS allows me to compare my results from one race to the next. It is perfect!”

Daniel and Jen both use the AquaPac to keep their phones dry all day.

Flying

Cam has been flying his iPhone 3G with MotionX-GPS around Sydney.
175021
He picked up a MultiPlex Easy Glider Pro, strapped MotionX-GPS to the fuselage and took off.

Here are the stats and photos from his first flight.

Fly time (from pressing START) 11.45 mins
Max Alt 288m (about 950 feet)
Max Speed 108 km/h (about 67 mph)
Distance travelled 9km (4.8 miles)
Av speed 45 km/h (28 mph)

Once Cam landed his glider here’s what he had to say, “I then impressed a dude at the park by adding his email into the ’shared’ recipients of my flight log with MotionX-GPS & emailed it to him before even taking anything off the plane. This also copied to him the KMZ & GPZ files from the flight. I just figured out how you can import them into Google Earth & see the flight in detail & where I did the different speeds heights etc.”
